Our Story
Founded in 1978, East Nashville Care Market (ENCM) emerged from the merger of two church coalitions with a shared vision: to create a community where neighbors help neighbors meet their practical needs and build a better tomorrow.
Over more than four decades, what began as a small interfaith initiative has grown into a vital community resource, serving over 400 families each month. The ENCM of 2025 focuses on some of our core principles: restoring dignity, empowering volunteers, and serving our neighbor with excellence. As our city evolves, we remain committed to preserving the spirit of neighborly support that has defined our eastside community for generations. We'd love for you to be part of that mission.
About Us
Volunteer Powered
We're proud to be led by a vibrant group of diverse volunteers. Our dedicated team of neighbors serving neighbors creates a warm, welcoming environment where everyone belongs.
You'll meet everyone from retirees to passionate parents, corporate directors to former ENCM clients. We started with an unlikely collaboration, and we are proud to still embody that spirit today.
Dignity First
We've designed our services to feel less like charity and more like community.
Our grocery program operates as a choice-based shopping experience, empowering our neighbors to select items that best meet their families' needs and preferences.
Forward-Looking
We envision an East Nashville where:
-
Everyone has reliable access to nutritious food and quality clothing
-
Neighbors know and support one another, diversifying their idea of community
-
Resources are shared freely
We hope you'll join us in making this vision a reality.
